Recreational Fishing – An Economic Powerhouse

Recreational fishing is big business. If sportfishing were a corporation, the amount spent by anglers to support fishing-related retail sales would rank it number 51 on the Fortune 500™ list. The economic contributions of recreational fishing have grown steadily over the last several decades.

This section provides a wide range of recreational fishing-related information and data from angler spending, wholesale shipments and retail trends, imports, fishing license sales and much more.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, more than 46 million licensed anglers generate over $48 billion in retail sales with a $115 billion impact on the nation’s economy creating employment for more than 828,000 people. The political clout is even greater when you consider at least 46 million anglers fished at some point over the past five-year period.
