ASA Partners and Resources

This section provides a partial list of organizations, agencies and businesses related to sportfishing. Inclusion in this list does not indicate an endorsement by ASA but is provided for information only. Recommendations for additions may be sent to ASAComm@asafishing.org. ASA reserves the right to accept or reject these recommendations.

AnglerSurvey
Through AngerSurvey, www.AnglerSurvey.com, individual anglers participate in a monthly survey that tracks their fishing experiences and expenditures. Sportfishing companies interested in AnglerSurvey results should contact Southwick Associates to learn more.

Bureau of Labor Statistics Wage data
National, regional and state wage data is tracked and reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Billfish Foundation
The Billfish Foundation (TBF) is the only non-profit organization dedicated solely to conserving and enhancing billfish populations around the world.

Center for Coastal Conservation
The Center for Coastal Conservation is a coalition of the leading advocates for marine recreational fishing and boating. It is dedicated to promoting sound conservation and use of ocean resources by supporting federal legislators who support its goals.

Coastal Conservation Association
CCA’s mission is to CCA is to conserve, promote and enhance the present and future availability of these coastal resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the general public.

Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF)
CSF’s sole focus is providing access and a voice for sportsmen in the U.S. Congress, the Administration and federal land management agencies, as well as state legislatures across the country.

Employment & Jobs Data: Bureau of Labor Statistics
Provides national, state and local employment data, including average hours worked per week and more.

Fishing on a National Wildlife Refuge
This guidebook provides information about fishing opportunities on National Wildlife Refuges across the country.

General Economic Trends: Regional Federal Reserve Offices
The regional federal reserve offices track the factors impacting the regional economy. Some excellent economic analyses are available via the regional offices.

Import / Export Data: U.S. International Trade Commission
This site provides detailed data regarding exports and imports down to the product category and by country of import or export.

Income Data: U.S. Census Bureau
This site provides national and state data and trends regarding personal income, and can be used to compare the relative wealth and disposable income between states and regions.

Inflation Data: Bureau of Labor Statistics
The official site for inflation data. A simple inflation calculator is available.

National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA)
NMMA is the trade association for the boating industry and provides boat registration data, participation data and other boating-related information.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries
NOAA Fisheries is dedicated to protecting and preserving the nation's living marine resources through scientific research, fisheries management, enforcement and habitat conservation. NOAA Fisheries is a leading voice for commercial and recreational fisheries and continues to focus its efforts on sustaining marine resources. The 2006 report, Fisheries of the U.S., provides the number of marine anglers, trips and annual catch by species, and provides some state-specific data.

National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA)
The information at this link compares sportfishing participation to other popular sports and recreations. Specifics include annual fishing participation trends as well as consumer purchases for common fishing tackle items and other sporting goods, plus other reports.

National Wildlife Refuge Association
The National Wildlife Refuge Association (NWRA) is an independent non-profit organization whose mission is to conserve America’s wildlife heritage for future generations through strategic programs that protect, enhance and expand the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Outdoor Industry Association
Founded in 1989, Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) is the premier trade association for companies in the active outdoor recreation business.

Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF)
RBFF is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase participation in recreational angling and boating and thereby increase public awareness and appreciation of the need for protecting, conserving and restoring this nation's aquatic natural resources. RBFF-sponsored research is available.

Responsive Management
A private research company, Responsive Management specializes in fish and wildlife management issues and has conducted many sportfishing research projects whose reports are publicly available.

Southwick Associates, Inc.
This site provides free copies of reports conducted for many fisheries agencies and non-profit organizations explaining the economic significance and other important aspects of recreational fisheries, including angler demographics for many states by species targeted.

Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP)
TRCP strengthens the laws, policies and practices affecting fish and wildlife conservation by leading partnerships that influence decision makers.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation
Conducted every five years, this is the definitive resource for information about fishing, hunting and wildlife-associated recreation in the U.S. This survey presents angler expenditures, number of anglers targeting specific species, demographics and much more.

U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service License Sales Data
Hosted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Division of Federal Aid, this site provides annual license sales, in customers and dollars generated, back to 1958. The data for a specific year can take up to 2 years to become available. This site also reports annual sportfishing excise tax collections and disbursements.

U.S. Forest Service’s National Visitor Use Monitoring Survey
Information is available here about the number of people visiting specific public forests across the nation and visitor days per forest. Also provided are expenditures made within 50 miles of each forest for fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing activities.

Wildlife Management Institute (WMI)
WMI works mostly on request with federal, state, and provincial agencies, Congress, college and university researchers and educators, other private conservation organizations, and professional associations. It advises, testifies and, in a variety of other ways, provides educational services on timely wildlife-related issues.
