Legislation has been introduced in the State Assembly that will ban the purchase of lead fishing weights and sinkers weighing 1.75 ounces or less. For most anglers, this ban covers just about every sinker and weight in their tackle box.
Since lead alternatives like tin and tungsten can cost 10 – 20 times more than standard sinkers, the cost of fishing is about to go up for California anglers.
Even worse, in the long run, this proposed bill will end up hurting conservation.
As the cost of fishing increases, fewer fishing licenses are sold, which means fewer dollars for critical state conservation, fishery and fish stocking programs. This ill-advised proposal will end up hurting wildlife in the long run.
