Frequently Asked Questions

Wondering what you can expect at the Keep America Fishing in DC Fly-In? We’ve answered some of our most frequently asked questions to help you navigate this one-of-a-kind experience.

What is a fly-in?

  • A “fly-in” is DC insider speak for a gathering of like-minded people to advocate for a unified cause; in our case, the future of the sportfishing industry and recreational fishingYou do not need to be an expert or have any prior experience in fisheries advocacy to attend. ASA staff will schedule your meetings with Congressional offices, provide talking points and background information, and join you for all the events.

Why should I attend?

  • Lawmakers need to hear from on-the-ground experts on how issues directly affect you, your businesses, your local fisheries and your communities. By joining ASA for this event, you will bring authenticity to conversations with members of Congress and federal agencies that our professional DC staff could never replicate. You will also build invaluable relationships with your elected officials that can benefit your company as future issues arise.

What is the easiest way to get to D.C.? When should I arrive and where should I stay?

  • Washington, D.C. is easily accessible from most major airports via Washington National Airport or Dulles International Airport. Amtrak trains are equally convenient from most Mid-Atlantic destinations, arriving and departing from Washington’s Union Station. ASA has secured a room block at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, just a short walk to the Capitol. Plan to arrive on Sunday, April 12, before our welcome reception at 5:30 PM that evening.

Who can I expect to meet?

  • We have scheduled a wide range of exciting and intimate opportunities to meet with lawmakers and leaders of federal agencies that oversee our issues. We will have speakers at breakfast and lunch, as well as a full day of meetings on the Hill with staff and members of CongressOur goal is to arrange meetings with each attendee’s specific member if time and schedules allow.

What should I wear?

  • Business attire is recommended for all Hill Meetings. Business casual is appropriate for committee meetings and after-hours receptions. Comfortable shoes are a must – you will be doing a lot of walking from one office to the next. April in Washington is usually quite pleasant but be sure to dress for potentially inclement weather.

Will there be opportunities to explore DC while I am in town?

  • We are excited to offer “insider events” for those who want to see more of our Nation’s capital. We’re hopeful to secure tours of the Library of Congress, the Capitol, and possibly the White House. April is also peak Cherry Blossom season, and the Smithsonian Museums are world-renowned and completely free.
If you would like to spend some time on the water while you are here, the famed shad run on the Potomac River should be in full swing. You can try your hand at catching them from shore or rent a rowboat at Fletcher’s Cove Boathouse. April is also a great time to chase striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay, a short drive from Washington. If you are interested in exploring fishing options, please reach out to a member of the ASA staff for more details.
